Elaine’s Scottish Run Boho Beret – Emma Sadler

Elaine’s Scottish Run Boho Beret – Emma Sadler

Elaine’s Scottish Run Boho Beret by Emma Sadler

I designed this beret for one of my running friends, Elaine; she had requested that I make her a red beret. This was at the same time that we were away for a double parkrun over the New Year. We weren’t in Scotland, but someone that she knew seemed to think we were. From then on this particular trip become affectionately known as ‘Elaine’s Scottish Run’.

The hat is a tam style with a providional cast on and double brim ribbed section. The stitch count is then increased for the main body before swirling decreases at the crown.

The samples were knitted in Stylecraft Special DK (100% acrylic) in colourway Burgundy 1035 and Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk DK (75% Merino, 20% silk, 5% cashmere). Or choose your own favourite DK weight yarn. The pattern comes in small, medium and large.

Produced with huge thanks to my tech editor – Tabitha Thomas Studios and my wonderful test knitters.

About the Elaine’s Scottish Run Beret Pattern

The Elderwood Walk Beret pattern is knitted with dk weight yarn.    You could substitute any soft dk weight yarn. I I used 4mm needles but if you wanted a drapier fabric, you could go up to a larger needle size. You might use more yarn, so allow for that when choosing your colours.

As always, when I’m knitting for the knitworthy members of my family or dear friends, I consider how they’re going to wear it, wash it, the colours they love and what styles they wear. In this case, it’s for me and I saw this yarn and felt it was perfect for the hat and cowl for the Elderwood design, it’s machine wash, soft and a stunning colour.

Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl by Emma Sadler

Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl by Emma Sadler

Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl by Emma Sadler Designs

The Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl pattern is named after one of my favourite Queen songs – She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes). The central cable panel is delicate and interesting in the way it ebbs and flows from loops to lines. The delicacy is like the stilettoes, but the lines is reminiscent of row upon row of men.

The cowl is knitted as a double fabric in the round. It has the stitch effect on the front and plain stocking stitch on the back. It can be made narrower or longer to suit the wearer’s personal preference. Once the pattern is established this is a great project to do in front of the TV. It uses a provisional cast on and then the two ends are joined together with Kitchener stitch.

The cowl was knitted in WYS Signature 4ply (75% wool, 25% nylon) in colourway Dusty Miller 129. It comes in small, medium and large. The yarn is made with 40% Wool, 35% Bluefaced Leicester, 25% Nylon and has approximately 400 meters per 100 gram ball.

This pattern wouldn’t be possible without the help of my tech editor, Linda at TabithaThomas or my wonderful test knitters.

The cowl patter is also quite quick to knit up so would make a great last minute gift if you find yourself needing to whip something up from your stash.

About the Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl

This easy, fast-knit cowl is a sure winner for Christmas or gift knitting. I’ve designed the cowl in three widths (or heights) but you can easily also adjust the length to make a longer loop, but you’ll need more yarn.

If you prefer a neutral colour, like the samples I’ve shown, it’ll go with pretty much anything. Don’t, however, be afraid of a bold or bright colour to make a real statement piece to go with your best Winter coat.

If you fancy a heavier weight cowl, you could make the shortest width/height using a thicker yarn, a DK or Worsted for example, use larger needles, it’d be lovely and warm for Winter.

Epic Boho Summer in Robin Hood’s Bay Hat by Emma Sadler

Epic Boho Summer in Robin Hood’s Bay Hat by Emma Sadler

Boho Style Summer in Robin Hood’s Bay Beret

This stylish, boho Summer in Robin Hood’s Bay hat pattern is the lace weight version of the Autumn in Robin Hood’s Bay beret. It combines sections of a traditional Old Shale pattern with stocking stitch.

This hat was designed following a visit to my LYS. As soon as I walked into the shop the skein of yarn caught my eye, and try as I might, I just couldn’t walk away from it!

This is the same as how I feel about Robin Hood’s Bay, which is why I named the set after this beautiful part of Yorkshire. I am drawn to the place, again and again. The pattern reflects the pull of
the sea in the dramatic colour, the plains of the North York Moors in the sections of stocking stitch as well as the dramatic cliff edges in the lace.

The hat is a beret/tam style; the shape combined with the lightweight wool means it has an interesting drape. It is big, loose, light and airy which is perfect for the transition the weather of spring brings to the UK. There is a matching scarf which is ideal for beginners to lace.

The skein was West Yorkshre Spinners Exquisite (80% Falkland wool, 20% mulberry silk) in colourway Savoy 371. Both the hat and the scarf can be made from one skein.

The scarf can be found here

The brim comes in small, medium or large. 17 (18, 19)“/43 (46, 48.5)cm. It has charted and written instructions plus a schematic.

as well as all my wonderful test knitters.

About the Summer in Robin Hood’s Bay Boho Hat Pattern

The Spring in Robin Hood’s Bay Boho Hat pattern is knitted with yarn from The Knitting Goddess.  I used her 4ply Britsock yarn, linked below, and it’s a dream to work with.  The colour range is fabulous and you should check out her gradient sets.  I love to promote British yarns whenever I can, so do let me know your favourites.   I blocked my hat using a large dinner plate to show off the beautiful crown and give it the distinct Tam shape.

Ziga Zig Ahh Cowl Pattern by Emma Sadler Designs

This Ziga Zig Ahh cowl is designed with a simple slip stitch pattern that creates an interesting zig zag effect in the knitted fabric.

It is suitable for a first project knitted on a circular or double pointed needles.

As there are only simple stitches it is ideal for a beginner. You could go up a needle size for a drapier fabric, do a swatch and see which you like best.
