Elaine’s Scottish Run Boho Beret – Emma Sadler

Elaine’s Scottish Run Boho Beret – Emma Sadler

Elaine’s Scottish Run Boho Beret by Emma Sadler

I designed this beret for one of my running friends, Elaine; she had requested that I make her a red beret. This was at the same time that we were away for a double parkrun over the New Year. We weren’t in Scotland, but someone that she knew seemed to think we were. From then on this particular trip become affectionately known as ‘Elaine’s Scottish Run’.

The hat is a tam style with a providional cast on and double brim ribbed section. The stitch count is then increased for the main body before swirling decreases at the crown.

The samples were knitted in Stylecraft Special DK (100% acrylic) in colourway Burgundy 1035 and Sublime Baby Cashmere Merino Silk DK (75% Merino, 20% silk, 5% cashmere). Or choose your own favourite DK weight yarn. The pattern comes in small, medium and large.

Produced with huge thanks to my tech editor – Tabitha Thomas Studios and my wonderful test knitters.

The Boho Beret is knitted in the round and comes in three sizes for the brim. It has written and charted instructions.

About the Elaine’s Scottish Run Beret Pattern

The Elderwood Walk Beret pattern is knitted with dk weight yarn.    You could substitute any soft dk weight yarn. I I used 4mm needles but if you wanted a drapier fabric, you could go up to a larger needle size. You might use more yarn, so allow for that when choosing your colours.

As always, when I’m knitting for the knitworthy members of my family or dear friends, I consider how they’re going to wear it, wash it, the colours they love and what styles they wear. In this case, it’s for me and I saw this yarn and felt it was perfect for the hat and cowl for the Elderwood design, it’s machine wash, soft and a stunning colour.

Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl by Emma Sadler

Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl by Emma Sadler

Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl by Emma Sadler Designs

The Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl pattern is named after one of my favourite Queen songs – She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes). The central cable panel is delicate and interesting in the way it ebbs and flows from loops to lines. The delicacy is like the stilettoes, but the lines is reminiscent of row upon row of men.

The cowl is knitted as a double fabric in the round. It has the stitch effect on the front and plain stocking stitch on the back. It can be made narrower or longer to suit the wearer’s personal preference. Once the pattern is established this is a great project to do in front of the TV. It uses a provisional cast on and then the two ends are joined together with Kitchener stitch.

The cowl was knitted in WYS Signature 4ply (75% wool, 25% nylon) in colourway Dusty Miller 129. It comes in small, medium and large. The yarn is made with 40% Wool, 35% Bluefaced Leicester, 25% Nylon and has approximately 400 meters per 100 gram ball.

This pattern wouldn’t be possible without the help of my tech editor, Linda at TabithaThomas or my wonderful test knitters.

The cowl patter is also quite quick to knit up so would make a great last minute gift if you find yourself needing to whip something up from your stash.

About the Stormtrooper in Stilettos Cowl

This easy, fast-knit cowl is a sure winner for Christmas or gift knitting. I’ve designed the cowl in three widths (or heights) but you can easily also adjust the length to make a longer loop, but you’ll need more yarn.

If you prefer a neutral colour, like the samples I’ve shown, it’ll go with pretty much anything. Don’t, however, be afraid of a bold or bright colour to make a real statement piece to go with your best Winter coat.

If you fancy a heavier weight cowl, you could make the shortest width/height using a thicker yarn, a DK or Worsted for example, use larger needles, it’d be lovely and warm for Winter.

Cadalach Sleep Sack Baby Sleeping Bag by Emma Sadler

Cadalach Sleep Sack Baby Sleeping Bag by Emma Sadler

Cadalach Sleep Sack Pattern by Emma Sadler Designs

I designed this baby sleeping bag for my step-grandson. His mum wanted something snuggly for him to sleep in during the day.

It is knitted in one long piece and then folded in half. The borders are picked up and knitted and the hood is added last.

The hood is finished by using Kitchener stitch to graft it together at the end. As the buttons hold the sides together there is no seaming to do.

Once you get into the rhythm, the long cabled section in the middle is perfect for knitting when you don’t want to concentrate too much.

As the sleeping bag is not fitted to the baby and they can wriggle around I wouldn’t recommend it for unsupervised sleeping.

The finished item takes around 600-1100g of chunky weight yarn.

Clodah Cabled Wrap Pattern by Emma Sadler

Clodah Cabled Wrap Pattern by Emma Sadler

Clodah Cabled Wrap Pattern by Emma Sadler Designs

This Clodah Cabled wrap pattern was first published in issue 50 of Knit Now magazine. The cables create a stunning and eye catching pattern.

The pattern includes both charted and written instructions for the cables.

It is knitted flat in one piece, all the borders are knitted as you go. As it is made using a large number of stitches you may prefer to use a long circular needle.

It is the perfect accessory to wear over party or wedding outfits, but is also a wonderfully welcome addition to any wardrobe for popping over your shoulders with a casual outfit if the weather isn’t as warm as it should be.

Corn Rows Cabled Cowl by Emma Sadler

Corn Rows Cabled Cowl by Emma Sadler

Corn Rows Cabled Cowl by Emma Sadler Designs

The Corn Rows Cabled cowl was designed to match the very popular Corn Rows Cabled Headband and boot toppers which are also available in my pattern store. It is knitted flat and seamed at the end.

The cabled pattern is very effective, but deceptively easy. You will soon pick up the repeating pattern. This means that this is the ideal project for working on whilst you are watching the TV.

It is also quite quick to knit up so would make a great last minute gift if you find yourself needing to whip something up from your stash.

The cowl takes 85g of aran weight yarn so it is a great project for using up that left over ball.
