Adorable Arthur’s Seat Blanket Pattern for a Baby Blanket by Emma Sadler Designs
The Arthur’s Seat Blanket pattern was designed for my new great-nephew, Arthur, who was born earlier this year. I wanted to use squares of different colours but I didn’t want to end up having to sew them all together. I used two shades of grey and a cream, some squares were knitted in one colour and some in two to create a more interesting pattern when they were lined up.
I am in love with garter stitch, I found it really stretchy and with an interesting texture and drape. The mitred squares are made first and then stitches are picked up around the edges in order to knit them together. The outside border is knitted in the round, and the construction means it isn’t a perfect square, but instead has slightly pointed corners.
It is one size and takes approx 650g of DK weight baby yarn.

Why the Arthur’s Seat Baby Blanket?
Why did I choose to name the Arthur’s Seat Blanket pattern after Arthur’s Seat? In this case the name came firstly from my great nephew who is called Arthur and I knitted this baby blanket as a gift for him. But, anyone who has ever been, or would love to visit Edinburgh, will have heard of Arthur’s Seat. Arthur’s Seat is an extinct volcano and the path up Salisbury Crags is the site of the radical road which has a fascinating history linked to the weaver’s (radicals) who came to the city and built the radical road to the summit of Arthur’s Seat.
Baby blankets are an awesome gift, why is that?
I think blankets are such a thoughtful gift for new Mum’s for their baby. They’re super handy for in the car on cold morning’s when you’ve got the baby in a car seat and want to keep them warm while the car warms up. They’re great to throw on the sofa for when you’re nursing the baby, reading or just enjoying time together. It feels like a warm hug and it’ll have your scent on it, to calm a crying baby when needed. A baby blanket also helps to keep Mum warm too, while she’s cuddling baby or making the most of a little cat nap while the little one is fast asleep.
Arthur’s Seat Blanket for baby is a fabulous heirloom to pass down the family
They might use the Arthur’s Seat blanket when they have their own children and grandchildren in future generations. The Arthur’s Seat Blanket is knitted with love in every stitch, how utterly cool is that? What colours will you knit your Blanket in? A rainbow? Neutrals or with pops of bright colour? I’d love to see them.
Fashions might change, but a knitted or crochet blanket always reminds us of home, of safety, of comfort and time with family.
