Mosswood Drive – Why?
Where does the name for this pattern come from, I hear you ask! Its a good question! And one that might have a surprising answer. I have named patterns for my favourite songs from my favourite band (Queen, just in case you didn’t know). I have also named patterns for my favourite musicals (Hamilton and Jesus Christ Superstar). But I have also named patterns for the areas in which I live now and have lived in the past. And this pattern falls into that category. One of my very good friends lives in a road with “Mosswood” in the name. This pattern is a bit of a nod to her and our friendship. She knows who she is!
Mosswood Drive – For You?
Do you like to have a project that you can just pick up and put down when you have only a few minutes to work on it without worrying about losing your place? Maybe you need something to keep in the car for when you are running errands? I know I have been keeping a project in there at the moment because whilst we are being encouraged to shop alone. And of course, its always nice to have a project that you don’t need to concentrate on too much when you are enjoying a movie or series in the evening. Mosswood Drive is a great project for that. Just do a few rounds when you have time.
Mosswood Drive – What?
So I guess you want me to tell you a bit more about the pattern? It is a beanie or toque style hat knitted in DK weight yarn. It includes instructions for a provisional cast on which can be grafted to the live stitches to make a double thickness brim. But you could also use your favourite cast on and just fold the brim over in the traditional way. I know a lot of people aren’t fans of grafting stitches.
What you have probably noticed about Mosswood Drive is the stitch pattern. It is eye catching but also really addictive to knit! You will need a solid yarn as well as a variegated. I used Stylecraft Bellissima for the solid colour and You and Me for the variegated. And this is where you can get really inventive! You could use that extremely busy skein of yarn that you love but you just don’t know what to do with. This is the perfect pattern for taming the crazy! You could use an ombre or a mini skein set. You could also use some scraps. Whatever combination you chose it will be a totally individual hat!
Mosswood Drive – The Crown?
Included in the pattern is not only the option to make it in a 17, 19 or 22 inch brim, but I have also added three lots instructions on changing the crown depending upon how fitted or slouchy you like your beanie hats. You could make one for your son who likes his hats nice and fitted, and then one for your sister who loves to wear hers big with a lot of slouch! And then there is the option to add a pom pom! So many choices!
And look at the great swirl on the crown that the decreases creates!
